SUMMER GREEN WINNERS

 

I love my greens but what a challenge to grow them in summer here in the sub-tropics of S-E Queensland.  In particular, this past summer, we have experienced consistently high temperatures which have taken their toll in the garden. What a dismay to watch lettuce, silverbeet and other greens wilt and flatten or bolt to seed and turn bitter even with extra care, shade and attention! However, there are two plants that I have recently discovered which have survived the onslaught of the summer inferno and not only survived but flourished.

HOMEMADE SPRAYS FOR ORGANIC PEST AND DISEASE CONTROL

I thought I would share 3 homemade sprays that I use quite often in the vegetable garden. The recipes have been adapted from Annette McFarlane’s website: Successful Gardening.http://www.annettemcfarlane.com/  While nothing can beat healthy organic soil for growing healthy plants, having a few additional weapons up your sleeve, when pests appear on the scene or disease sets in, can be a bonus. These sprays aren’t “cure-alls” but are helpful for remedying problems in the garden or at least preventing them from getting worse.
